Caffeine Half-Life: How Long It Stays in Your Body and When to Stop

Caffeine half-life is about 5 hours but ranges from 1.5 to 9.5. See how long caffeine stays in your system and how to set your own cut-off time.

TL;DR: The average caffeine half-life in healthy adults is about 5 hours, but it varies from roughly 1.5 to 9.5 hours. After one half-life, half the caffeine is still in your blood. That's why a 4 pm coffee can still be working at 10 pm. A safe default: stop at least 8 hours before bed, and earlier if you're a slow metaboliser.

What half-life means

Half-life is the time your body takes to clear half of a substance. If you drink a drink with 100 mg of caffeine and your half-life is 5 hours:

Hours afterCaffeine still in your body (approx.)
0100 mg
550 mg
1025 mg
1512.5 mg

The "5 hours" is an average, not your number.

What changes your half-life

  • Genetics: variants in the CYP1A2 liver enzyme make some people fast, others slow.
  • Smoking: speeds clearance (shorter half-life).
  • Oral contraceptives: can roughly double the half-life.
  • Pregnancy: half-life lengthens, which is why limits are lower.
  • Liver conditions and some medicines (certain antibiotics, antidepressants): slow clearance.
  • Age: infants clear it slowly; older adults may too.

If you have any of the slowing factors, move your cut-off earlier.

Caffeine and sleep: what the research says

In a controlled study (Drake et al. 2013), caffeine taken even 6 hours before bed measurably reduced total sleep time. A later review (Gardiner et al. 2023) concluded that caffeine can shorten sleep and lower sleep efficiency. You may fall asleep fine yet still sleep more lightly. That's the sneaky part.

Find your own cut-off

  1. Start with 8 hours before bed as the default.
  2. If your sleep is light or you wake a lot, try 10 hours for a week.
  3. If you sleep well and feel fine, you can test 6 to 7 hours, but don't assume.
  4. Track sleep quality, not just how fast you fall asleep.

Tricks that don't work

  • "I can drink it and sleep anyway." You can fall asleep and still lose deep-sleep quality.
  • Strong tea at night instead of coffee. Tea has less caffeine per cup, but not none.
  • Energy drinks late. Same caffeine rules, plus sugar.

FAQ

How long does caffeine stay in your system? Half of it clears in about 5 hours on average, but traces can remain for 10 to 15 hours or longer.

When should I stop drinking coffee? At least 8 hours before bed, earlier if you're sensitive.

Does caffeine half-life change with age? Yes. It tends to lengthen in older adults and is much longer in infants.

Does L-theanine shorten caffeine's effect? No. It doesn't change caffeine clearance.
